Project Overview
Prairie Lakes is a mixed-use commercial development in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, for which Knothe & Bruce Architects designed several of the retail and restaurant buildings throughout the site. Rather than defaulting to the corporate aesthetic of the surrounding big-box structures, KBA approached each building with a focus on material richness, human scale, and façade articulation that gives the development a distinct architectural identity within the broader Prairie Lakes corridor.
The exterior draws on heavy masonry and limestone cladding at the base, grounding the buildings in the landscape and echoing the native limestone elements found throughout the development's 75-foot greenway. Stepped parapets of varying heights break the roofline into distinct segments, giving each storefront its own visual identity while avoiding the monotony of a continuous commercial façade. Dark metal awnings and warm wood panel accents introduce shadow lines and depth, providing natural sun shading while contributing an upscale character that distinguishes the buildings from their neighbors. Storefront glazing spans floor to ceiling along the primary elevation, flooding retail interiors with natural light and creating a transparent connection between indoor shoppers and the outdoor walkways.
The buildings are set back from the main driving lanes to accommodate wide pedestrian walkways and deep outdoor patio areas that support the active dining culture of the restaurant tenants. Internally, a modular structural grid allows demising walls to be repositioned with ease, enabling spaces to adapt from a small boutique footprint to a full restaurant kitchen and dining room configuration. Mechanical systems and utility infrastructure are consolidated into rear service corridors, keeping the storefront rooflines clean and the pedestrian-facing elevations entirely uncluttered.
